If you adore vintage shops but love a good bargain even more, vintage kilo sales are the place to be! You can pick up a few great deals for as little as £10 a kilo! There’s no singular trick to ace a kilo sale, but there are definitely a few tips that can help you through the rush of a bargain hunt.
I’ve been to big and small kilo sales across the north of England and this is what I’ve found:
If you’re planning on paying at the door, they usually have an early bird ticket starting around 11am. However if you look on their Facebook pages you might actually be able to find a Super Earlybird ticket at the exact same price that starts an hour early! You know what that means... MORE BARGAINS FOR YOU!
One challenge you may face when going to a kilo sale is the location. The places have to be close enough to catch a good amount of people’s eye but also a big enough place to be able to have racks and racks of clothing set up. So make sure you give yourself plenty of time to travel!
I don’t know what they think you're hiding in there but they seem to like to check bags, so make sure there’re nothing too embarrassing in there! While we’re on the subject of bags, remember you'll be powering through the racks so don’t have a bag too heavy or that will get in between you and your bargains.
These events are usually lacking in changing rooms so make sure you wear an outfit you can easily try on top of. Trying the clothes on is also good because the same sizes can vary a lot!
You’re now in the event, dressed appropriately with sheer determination. Only problem you have is everyone else has the same drive to find those perfect items. The last one I went to I saw a guy wrap his arms around half a rack and wrestled them into a bag. I’m not saying this is the best way but speed is definitely key!
While speed is key, do not get sloppy! Look for any stains and damage to the items. It’s also a good idea to weigh up if the damage is fixable or can’t be seen while wearing if you think you just can’t live without that item.
After you’ve shuffled your way through every rack possible, don’t forget to check out the accessory boxes. You could get yourself handful of accessories at such a small cost due to their lightness!
Just to mention the point above... LIGHT ITEMS ARE KEY TO A GOOD BARGAIN!
Next stop for you is the tills, remember not to leave the coat hangers in the bags. This will literally cost you!
If you’re jaw drops and your head starts to sweat when the cashier reads out the price, don’t think you have to buy all the items at this point if you got a bit too into the kilo sale frenzy. Plenty of times I’ve asked for them to check the weight before I actually commit to my items.
Be careful what you have planned for the rest of the day, if you’ve got plans to go for drinks straight after you might want to make arrangements for your bags. Different events use different kinds of bags. Some use cute branded bags and some give you a clear bin bag that looks like you’ve just walked out of Litchfield Penitentiary. So be prepared!
To find your local events, check your social media since you can usually find a large amount of events happening in different cities near you!
