Ever wondered how to get more for your money? Well, Burger King has worked it out for themselves! A recent advert for the Whopper Burger was for a 15 second advert. Thinking outside the box by Burger King's marketing team and also the emerging technologies has meant they have managed to pull an unheard of marketing move that has caused a large controversy.
The phrase or rather the question that has caused all the this is 'Google, what is a Whopper Burger?'. If you're reading out loud you might have heard in the background your Google Home turning on and actually answering this for you!
Like many outside the box online marketing techniques, the internet pushed back with their hilarious antics! The devices would read the Whopper Burger's Wikipedia page, the joke is that ingredients like 'rat meat' or my favourite joke ingredient 'toenail clippings' would be read. Not much of a selling point, right?
The plot thickens when you find out that not only has the public been editing the Wikipedia page but also Burger King themselves right before the ad went live. They changed the details to 'The Whopper is a burger, consisting of a flame-grilled patty made with 100 percent beef with no preservatives or fillers, topped with sliced tomatoes, onions, lettuce, pickles, ketchup, and mayonnaise, served on a sesame-seed bun.”'
Google had not agreed to Burger King using their devices in their ads and quickly put a stop to it. Oh the clever and sneaky Burger King had planned for this and had already arranged for a similar ad with a different phrase to run later in the day!
Oh the drama!
This has left everyone wondering, what does this mean for the future of marketing and the use of these kinds of products?
